5 Steps to Keep Your Laptop Secure

The first laptop was invented in 1981. It wasn’t exactly portable, though, as it weighed nearly 25 pounds!

Obviously, things have changed a lot since then. Not only are they more compact, but they also come with more features.

Like all computers, however, they can still get hacked. Fortunately, there are steps that you can take to protect your device.

And that’s what we’ll be talking about today! More specifically, we’ll be going over some things that you can do to keep your laptop secure—so be sure to read the rest of the post!

1. Choose Strong Passwords Where It Counts

Setting a strong password can come a long way when it comes to improving laptop security. That is, you want to use a mix of alphabetical and numeric characters.

If you can, try to include some symbols. Avoid using words that can be found in a dictionary.

Tip: Don’t use the same passwords across different platforms—that’ll just make it easier for hackers to gain access to your accounts.

2. Keep Your System Up-to-Date

Keep up with your system updates. Not only do they add new features but they also cover security holes.

The same goes for your software. Watch for updates and upgrade as necessary. With that said, you want to avoid pre-release versions as they may be unstable.

3. Install Antivirus Software

All computers are inherently vulnerable to viruses and other malware. Given that, you might want to install an anti-virus program.

While they’re not completely foolproof, they can definitely help. For one thing, you can use them to remove viruses from your laptop. Not only that, but they can alert you if your computer is at risk of an attack.

4. Encrypt Your Data

Encrypting your hard drive will make it much more resistant to cyber-attacks. If anything, it’s one of the best forms of laptop protection.

Basically, it’ll turn your data into code so that it’ll be harder for hackers to steal your information.

In terms of how to do it, there are various tools that you can use. Just search around!

5. Stay Private When in Public

Consider installing a privacy screen on your laptop—it’ll help block out any unwanted glances at your screen.

Also, you might want to cover up your webcam as there’s always a chance that it might be compromised (e.g. hackers can use it to spy on you via remote tools).

Last but not least, you might want to use a virtual private network (VPN). Put it simply, it’ll mask your IP so that no one will be able to monitor your internet activity.

Keeping Your Laptop Secure

And there you have it—five things that you can do to keep your laptop secure. As you can see, it’s pretty straight forward!
